eleven

The director’s big wooden door swung shut behind Olive.

It was solid, almost cathedral looking. Oak, Olive surmised. And it wasn’t the only piece. Olive was amazed to discover everything in the director’s office was made out of wood: there was a large wooden desk, elaborate carved chairs, solid hardwood floors, and high redwood ceilings.

A forest had given its life so this office could live.

And it was warm.

The polished lumber glowed with a presence that suggested the trees had given their blessings as the lumberjacks had come, as if they had known, instinctively, that their insides would live on in harmony and beauty well after their bark had dried and gone. Olive had never seen such an office. And beautiful as it was, she couldn’t help but wish she wasn’t seeing it now.

She had left Lewiston to sweat it out in his cubicle. Olive just hoped he wouldn’t do anything stupid, like die from shock.

“What does the director want to see me about?” Olive had asked the page in the hallway.

He just shrugged. “Ask him yourself.”

The worker motioned past the secretary, who barely looked up from her correspondence to point out the big wooden door.

“In there,” he said, leaving her staring in a daze.

“Great.” She straightened her shoulders, gathered her moxie, and marched confidently through the door. She had entered the office without a moment’s hesitation, but now that she was inside, she wished she had taken a moment or two. After all, these were her last true moments of freedom. She was in serious trouble. The S.P.Y. Academy director knew everything she had done.

The lumber looked down.

Of course she would claim full responsibility for her actions. No sense in Lewiston's career exploding with hers. She’d tell them he was completely innocent. She was a rogue agent, a sleeper cell who had been biding her time for years, bent on breaking into the file room of the CIA. She would say that she blackmailed Lewiston, no, held him hostage at knifepoint and forced him to act against his will. They’d have no recourse against him. They might even give him a medal for bravery, for doing his best and for serving his country, even under the direst of straits.

She’d probably end up in jail, and not just the Sand Prison, a real jail, with real live criminals. Criminals she had helped to put away. She’d have to make up a nickname to be called in the clink. It should be tough but still feminine, like Dragonstooth or Sticky Fingers.

And she’d never get to see her mom again.

She’d never see anyone.

She’d be a felon. And Lewiston would be in the clear.

But at least Kitty would know how much she meant to her, how Olive was willing to commit treason in the name of their friendship, to risk life and limb and to cause an international incident, just to prove their bond. Lewiston would tell her… even if Olive never could.

She sat down in one of the oversized wooden chairs to await her fate.
